Whoopsie! (aka Oy, Gevalt!)

Supper: chicken wings, delicious homemade grated-potato-and-carrot latkes, tinned French-style green beans.

If you guessed that plate A) is dairy and plate B) is meat, you are correct. So what are the sticky chicken wings doing on plate A)? My question exactly!

Luckily, everything was, if not cold, certainly not the piping “yad-soledes-bo” hot that it had been right when it finished cooking. And everything but the chicken wings was pareve anyway. No biggie.

We slid the food from dairy to meat plates and washed the dairy plates well under cool water. All’s well that ends well.

The sad thing is that I didn’t notice the plate at all until I grabbed my camera to take a picture. If I hadn’t looked through the viewfinder, we might have been halfway through the meal before anyone noticed!

What do we tell our kids about Chabad and “Yechi”?

If I start by saying I really like Chabad, and adore the late Lubavitcher Rebbe, z"l, well... maybe you already know where I'm headed. Naomi Rivka has been asking lately what I think about Chabad. She asks, in part, because she already knows how I feel. She already knows I’m bothered, though to her, it’s mostly about “liking” and “not liking.” I wish things were that simple. Our little neighbourhood in Israel has a significant Chabad presence, and Chabad conducts fairly significant outreach within the community. Which sounds nice until you realize that this is a religious neighbourhood, closed on Shabbos, where some huge percentage of people are shomer mitzvos.
