Other “weekly challenges”:

We’re a Jewish family of 6 (2 parents, 4 kids) and all our meals are kosher.  Newcomers, read my MPM intro here which tells you all about how we eat, or just visit my big ol’ list of Everything We Eat.  We eat mostly non-meat, and I try to include at least one vegan meal every single week – I call it Vegan Vursday!

no, this kid is not me or anyone in my family... !This week’s theme:  “Short on inspiration, long on COLD…”  Today is only around 0, but that’s the highest temperature we’ll see at least until next Sunday.

Oy – and although I started typing this up around 10 am, I can see that it’s now 11:40, hardly even Monday anymore, and I still haven’t posted it.  Drat.  And it’s been so popular lately, I’m sure I’ll be #400 in the linkies.

Sunday:  take out whatevers: pizza & falafel & sabich at Mommy’s house

Monday (tonight):  anything easy where I don’t have to go out of the house – salmon cakes/loaf?  rice?

Tuesday (Ted late):  Chicken and potatoes and a veg on the side – tinned carrots (Naomi’s request)

Wednesday:  BREAD!  We  have to eat bread!!!  Tuna noodle casserole plus BREAD plus soup?  Too much tinned fish; I will probably change this meal…

Thursday (Ted off):  Polenta with roasted root veg assorté

Shabbos:  ???

So that’s it; I’m done!  What is your family eating this week?

What do we tell our kids about Chabad and “Yechi”?

If I start by saying I really like Chabad, and adore the late Lubavitcher Rebbe, z"l, well... maybe you already know where I'm headed. Naomi Rivka has been asking lately what I think about Chabad.  She asks, in part, because she already knows how I feel.  She already knows I’m bothered, though to her, it’s mostly about “liking” and “not liking.”  I wish things were that simple. Our little neighbourhood in Israel has a significant Chabad presence, and Chabad conducts fairly significant outreach within the community.  Which sounds nice until you realize that this is a religious neighbourhood, closed on Shabbos, where some huge percentage of people are shomer mitzvos.  Sure, it’s mostly religious Zionist, and there are a range of observances, for sure, but we’re pretty much all religious here in some way or another. So at that point, this isn’t outreach but inreach .  Convincing people who are religious to be… what? A lot of Chabad’s efforts here are focused on kids, including a
