When you look at maps of the Middle East (which I was just now, hypothetically), all the place names are in Arabic – except in Israel, where they’re in… um, English.
This bothers me, probably more than it should.
Just like the growing interest in Arabic lessons for English-speaking children, it confirms for me that the Arab bloc is a rising superpower and there’s not much we can do about it.
That makes me nervous.
Postscript: I’m not nervous anymore! I double-checked and Greece – NOT a rising superpower – also gets place names in its own language. So I guess it’s just Hebrew they don’t like.
Wait a minute… now I’m nervous again.
